IT WAS A sold-out performance of the captivating show "Banjo" at Regal Estate Wines last Sunday that still has local audiences buzzing nearly a week later.

The production beautifully intertwined the life of iconic Australian poet Banjo Paterson with stunning new arrangements of Coldplay’s greatest hits and contemporary dance, creating a fresh and powerful narrative of hardship, hope, and the quest for happiness.

The show follows Paterson’s journey from his childhood in 1880s rural Australia to his life in the city, and eventually, back to the country. Throughout the production, Paterson’s legendary verses, including Clancy of the Overflow, The Man from Snowy River, Waltzing Matilda, and As Long As Your Eyes Are Blue, merge seamlessly with Coldplay anthems like Fix You, Yellow, Clocks, and Viva La Vida.

Written and performed by former Hi-5 star Tim Maddren, in collaboration with Port Macquarie-based Got Ya Back Productions, "Banjo" has proven to be a hit with regional NSW audiences. Local theatre-goers at Regal Estate Wines were treated to a show that celebrated the power of storytelling and the unique blend of music and dance.

“We’re so proud to have made this show in regional NSW, for regional audiences, and now to be able to tour it this far from home,” said Maddren, reflecting on the regional success of the show.

The production is the culmination of a long process of development, made possible through the support of Eastern Riverina Arts and the Riverina Touring Network. This voluntary collaboration of performance venues across the Riverina brings high-quality theatre to the region. "Banjo" has benefitted from this network’s efforts and the support of Create NSW, ensuring regional audiences have access to world-class performances.

The show’s choreography, led by Tim’s wife, renowned dance choreographer Steph Maddren (known for her work on (So You Think You Can Dance and Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby), adds a unique visual element to the performance, further enhancing the emotional depth of the production.

The regional tour, which has already made stops in Griffith and other centres, has been a sell-out success, with further dates to be announced. Those who missed the West Wyalong performance are encouraged to check Got Ya Back Productions’ Facebook page for upcoming shows in the region. You won’t be disappointed!
