Australia ‘Clay’ for John and Courtney crowned champions at 2025 Barmedman Australia Day Damper Competition
THE 2025 Barmedman Australia Day Damper Competition saw a historic win as John and Courtney Clay triumphed in both the male and female categories, continuing a family legacy of culinary excellence going back over a decade.

Their victory has cemented their place in the prestigious competition's honour roll, joining the ranks of past champion families such as the Wells, Moore’s and Sandow’s while adding another chapter to the Clay family's remarkable local history.
The competition, first held in 1992 and won by Rosemary McLaren, has grown over the years, attracting bakers of all interests and abilities to compete for the coveted prize which includes bragging rights and a replica damper. Shirley Clay, was a two-time winner of the prestigious event in 2012 and 2014. The win marks a proud moment for the Clay family, further solidifying their damper-baking prowess.
The competition was a tightly contested one, with Geoff and Michelle Bush officiating. Each of the competitors presented their best versions of the classic Aussie dish, but it was John and Courtney’s expert technique and passion for the art that impressed the judges the most – not to mention the taste. Their dampers were praised for their perfect balance of texture and flavour, earning them the highest scores in their respective categories.
This year’s event also saw Gemma Logg claim the junior damper prize, with the young baker impressing the judges with her creativity and skill in the kitchen. Gemma, who has been baking with her family for several years, was thrilled with the recognition.
The trophy, which is awarded to the competition’s champions each year, was originally crafted by the late John Aldridge, whose memory continues to live on through the tradition. The competition, held annually on Australia Day, is a celebration of the country’s rich baking culture and has become an iconic part of the local festivities.
As John and Courtney Clay join the ranks of past winners, the community of Barmedman is once again reminded of the deep connections that come with shared traditions and the simple joy of a well-baked damper.
For the Clay family, this win is a special one, but it’s also a continuation of a legacy of love, baking, and community spirit that will undoubtedly inspire future generations of damper makers in the years to come.
